A Knowledge-Based System as a Sustainable Software Application for the Supervision and Intelligent Control of an Alcoholic Fermentation Process

2020

One goal of specialists in food processing is to increase production efficiency in accordance with sustainability by optimising the consumption of raw food materials, water, and energy. One way to achieve this purpose is to develop new methods for process monitoring and control. In the winemaking industry, there is a lack of procedures regarding the common work based on knowledge acquisition and intelligent control. In the present article, we developed and tested a knowledge-based system for the alcoholic fermentation process of white winemaking while considering the main phases: the latent phase, exponential growth phase, and decay phase. The automatic control of the white wine&rsquo

Convergences and divergences between scientific and Indigenous and Local Knowledge contribute to inform carnivore conservation

2021

There is increasing recognition that diverse knowledge systems can work in mutually enriching ways and that Indigenous and Local Knowledge (ILK) can enhance biodiversity conservation. However, studies using scientific knowledge and ILK in a complementary manner, and acknowledging convergent and especially divergent insights have remained limited. In this study, we contrasted proxies of abundances and trends of threatened and conflict-prone carnivores (caracal, cheetah, jackal, lion, leopard, spotted hyaena, striped hyaena) derived separately from scientific knowledge and ILK. We conducted camera trapping, track surveys and semi-structured interviews with local pastoralists from northern Ken…

The Psychology of Thinking in Creating AI

2021

The broad-scale emergence of AI in industry calls forth basic questions in terms of the knowledge bases and approaches relevant for its design. Engineering design has been mainly developed for electromechanical artifacts. In practice, this has meant that the scientific knowledge required for creating technical artifacts such as engines, cars, ships, cranes, telephones, radios, TVs, and simple data processing units has been natural science. However, one cannot find intelligent processes by means of physics and chemistry. Natural scientific phenomena follow their deterministic laws, but intelligence is based on selection and decision processes. The conceptual landscape of natural science is o…

Predictive and Evolutive Cross-Referencing for Web Textual Sources

2017

International audience; One of the main challenges in the domain of competitive intelligence is to harness important volumes of information from the web, and extract the most valuable pieces of information. As the amount of information available on the web grows rapidly and is very heterogeneous, this process becomes overwhelming for experts. To leverage this challenge, this paper presents a vision for a novel process that performs cross-referencing at web scale. This process uses a focused crawler and a semantic-based classifier to cross-reference textual items without expert intervention, based on Big Data and Semantic Web technologies. The system is described thoroughly, and interests of…

An introduction to knowledge computing

2014

This paper deals with the challenges related to self-management and evolution of massive knowledge collections. We can assume that a self-managed knowledge graph needs a kind of a hybrid of: an explicit declarative self-knowledge (as knowledge about own properties and capabilities) and an explicit procedural self-knowledge (as knowledge on how to utilize own properties and the capabilities for the self-management).We offer an extension to a traditional RDF model of describing knowledge graphs according to the Semantic Web standards so that it will also allow to a knowledge entity to autonomously perform or query from remote services different computational executions needed. We also introdu…

Towards MKDA: A Knowledge Discovery Assistant for Researches in Medicine

2007

Nowadays doctors are generating a huge amount of raw data. These data, analyzed with data mining techniques, could be sources of new knowledge. Unluckily such tasks need skilled data analysts, and not so much researchers in Medicine are also data mining experts. In this paper we present a web based system for knowledge discovery assistance in Medicine able to advice a medical researcher in this kind of tasks. The user must define only the experiment specifications in a formal language we have defined. The system GUI helps users in their composition. Then the system plans a Knowledge Discovery Process (KDP) on the basis of rules in a knowledge base. Finally the system executes the KDP and pr…

Knowledge Acquisition Based on Semantic Balance of Internal and External Knowledge

1999

This paper presents a strategy to handle incomplete knowledge during acquisition process. The goal of this research is to develop formal tools that benefit the law of semantic balance. The assumption is used that a situation inside the object’s boundary in some world should be in balance with a situation outside it. It means that continuous cognition of an object aspires to a complete knowledge about it and knowledge about internal structure of the object will be in balance with knowledge about relationships of the object with other objects in its environment. It is supposed that one way to discover incompleteness of knowledge about some object is to measure and compare knowledge about its …

Intelligent system for material quality control using impact-echo testing

2008

This paper introduces an intelligent system to discern the quality of materials inspected by the impact-echo technique. The system includes a hardware setup to inspect parallelepiped-shape materials and a procedure to classify the material depending on its quality condition. Four levels of classification with different grades of knowledge about the material defects are approached: material condition, kind of defect, defect orientation, and defect dimension. The number of classes (material qualities) in the lowest classification level is 12. The procedure is applied on signals coming from 3D finite element simulations and lab experiments with aluminium specimens. The classification procedure…

Exception-Tolerant Hierarchical Knowledge Bases for Forward Model Learning

2021

This article provides an overview of the recently proposed forward model approximation framework for learning games of the general video game artificial intelligence (GVGAI) framework. In contrast to other general game-playing algorithms, the proposed agent model does not need a full description of the game but can learn the game's rules by observing game state transitions. Based on hierarchical knowledge bases, the forward model can be learned and revised during game-play, improving the accuracy of the agent's state predictions over time. This allows the application of simulation-based search algorithms and belief revision techniques to previously unknown settings. We show that the propose…

A Conceptual Architecture of Ontology Based KM System for Failure Mode and Effects Analysis

2014

Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a systematic method for procedure analyses and risk assessment. It is a structured way to identify potential failure modes of a product or process, probability of their occurrence, and their overall effects. The basic purpose of this analysis is to mitigate the risk and the impact associated to a failure by planning and prioritizing actions to make a product or a process robust to failure. Effective manufacturing and improved quality products are the fruits of successful implementation of FMEA. During this activity valuable knowledge is generated which turns into product or process quality and efficiency. If this knowledge can be shared and reused…
